China’s Clean Tech Export Surge Is Reshaping Global Industrial Supply Chains
China installed 434 GW of new wind and solar capacity in 2025, while clean-tech exports hit a record USD 222 billion and are on track to surpass that level in 2026.
China’s clean-energy story is increasingly about scale at home and reach abroad. In 2025, China added a record 434 GW of new wind and solar capacity, up from just 123 GW in 2022. Its build-out is now globally significant: China accounted for around 62% of new solar and 75% of new wind capacity worldwide last year. Renewables in China reached 2,460 GW by June 2026, equivalent to 60.7% of the country’s total generating capacity.
Domestic additions have slowed sharply in 2026, particularly for solar. A shift from guaranteed tariffs to market-based pricing in June 2025 prompted developers to bring projects online before the change, inflating last year’s additions and creating a high comparison base. Through July 2026, solar additions were down 62% YoY and wind 12%.
But China’s clean-tech manufacturing machine is increasingly looking outward. Exports of batteries, EVs, solar PV, grid equipment, wind equipment and heating & cooling systems reached a record USD 222.5 billion in 2025. By July 2026, exports had already reached USD 170.4 billion, 77% of the entire 2025 total. China is not only building its own energy transition at extraordinary scale; its industrial base is increasingly supplying the transition elsewhere.
