Machinery & Electronics Anchor China’s Exports
Asia dominated China’s imports, while Oceania recorded the fastest growth and North America lagged behind other regions.
China’s appetite for global goods continues to expand, reinforcing its importance not only as the world’s leading exporter but also as one of its largest customers. In the first nine months of 2026, China’s imports reached USD 2.43 trillion, up 27.5% year-on-year, with demand spanning advanced technology, industrial machinery, energy and raw materials.
Electrical machinery and equipment topped the import list at USD 664 billion, accounting for 27% of the total and reflecting China’s deep integration into global electronics and manufacturing supply chains. Mineral fuels, ores and precious metals together accounted for USD 786 billion, or nearly one-third of imports, underscoring the country’s continued importance as a buyer of global resources.
Geographically, Asia remained firmly at the centre of China’s import network, supplying USD 1.36 trillion, or 56% of the total. South Korea, Taiwan (China), and Japan were among its leading suppliers, underscoring strong regional industrial linkages.
But growth extended well beyond Asia. Imports from Europe and Latin America rose 26%, while Oceania posted the fastest growth at 38%, with Australia remaining a major supplier. Africa grew 19%, while North America trailed at just 9%.
The broader picture is a Chinese economy whose enormous import market continues to create opportunities for exporters worldwide, even as growth rates differ considerably by region.
